How MultiLink works
ABM Terminal Use
POS Terminal Use

The MultiLink Network operates by providing a central exchange point connecting its Member Financial Institutions of which there are seven providing service through the network.

When a transaction is attempted the Institution that gave the customer the card is called the Issuer and the Institution that owns the ABM or POS terminal is called the Acquirer.

When a customer of another Member Institution presents their card at either an ABM or POS terminal  the Acquiring Institution routes the transaction to the MultiLink Network which in turn routes the request to correct card Issuer.

The Issuer Institution examines the request and confirms that the information is correct and the a valid PIN was entered. The Issuer then ascertains that the customer account has sufficient funds available and if so sends back an electronic approval through the MultiLink Network to the Acquirer's terminal.

Once this approval is received the customer is turn get the desired service. In the case of an ABM this make take the form of either a cash withdrawal or a simple balance inquiry. At a POS terminal the requested payment is made to the merchants account.
